Better Dogs Resource Pack 1.20 / 1.19

At the time of writing this, the Better Dogs resource pack has been out for less than a month. However, it has received an incredible amount of praise from the community in this short time and already has more than 18,000 downloads. As more players realize how unique and extraordinary this texture pack is, we fully expect this number to increase exponentially. While most resource packs that you find in the Minecraft world make changes to the already existing game blocks and items, the Better Dogs resource pack takes things to a whole other level. This pack changes the wolves’ textures in the game and adds many more dog breeds that come in many different colors. Keep in mind, this is a resource pack, not a mod. This means it is easily installed, the same way you would usually install any other Minecraft resource pack. This pack is going to let you get a specific type of dog while you are playing Minecraft.

Featured video:

And the steps are simple. First, you are going to tame a wolf. This newly tamed wolf will turn into a random dog. In some cases, it will remain a wolf when tamed. If you want a specific breed of dog, you can change the dogs breed, and name it using name tags. To do this, the name tag must include one of the words on the “supported name tags list,” which you can find lower down on this page. The Better Dog resource pack comes in 16×16 resolution, which means you aren’t going to have to worry about performance drops. While this resource pack is made to work on virtually any device, it does require optifine to work regardless of the hardware capabilities. You may get a message asking if you are sure that you wish to load the pack as it was created for a newer or older version of Minecraft, click yes and the pack will load correctly. To ensure that this resource pack works the way you expect it to, enable custom entity models and random entities in Minecraft’s settings.

Better Dogs should be compatible with all of these Minecraft versions: 1.20.6 - 1.20.5 - 1.20.4 - 1.20.3 - 1.20.2 - 1.20.1 - 1.20 - 1.19.4 - 1.19.3 - 1.19.2 - 1.19.1 - 1.19 - 1.18.2 - 1.18.1 - 1.18 - 1.17.1 - 1.17 - 1.16.5 - 1.16.4 - 1.16.3 - 1.16.2 - 1.16.1 - 1.16 - 1.15.2 - 1.15.1 - 1.15 - 1.14.4 - 1.14.3 - 1.14.2 - 1.14 - 1.13.2 - 1.13.1 - 1.13 - 1.12.2 - 1.12 - 1.11.2 - 1.11 - 1.10.2 - 1.10 - 1.9.4 - 1.9 - 1.8.9 - 1.8.8 - 1.8.1 - 1.8.6 - 1.8

    does it work with 1.8.8

    1. Admin

      It should work just fine.

  2. Nev

If the resource pack is not working and it seems that the dogs are a random combination it’s because you’re using another resource pack that is interrupting it. Just take all of them off and one by one check which pack is causing the random combination. Hope this helps <3

  3. Dalla

It make me so happy :D

  4. crow

Okay one of the dog types that I get is just a regular wolf, and the other looks like an eldritch beast or like a combination of all dog types or something. I only get 2 kinds. I have optifine and the pack is compatible. Very strange

  6. Bux

Hi, I can’t change the name of my dogs, without it also changing to another breed. How do I fix this? Cause I wanted the short haired Chih Tzu, but it changed into a Border Collie when I renamed him Bowie

  7. Audacity

  8. Help

Everything is working but is tehre a way to sync the race on a server? I saw a terrier and my friend saw a husky

    1. Help

Okay so my friend is seeing just the wolf model, we both have the same optifine and the same texturepack version installed. Any Ideas on how to fix it?

  9. Cunctator

Is there a way to change the race of the dog AND put a custom name without showing that I changed the race?

  16. I

what I have to do if my dogs doesn’t looking like dog. I try to downloaud Opifine but its not for free?

    1. Admin

You need optifine for this pack to work. Optifine is completely free.

      1. Maissanne

Hi, I have optifine and everything that you asked to be on is on, the resource pack is active and I’ve got all the required mods but the dogs looks like stick :( I’m on 1.12.2

  17. i

  19. A

Why do my dogs not look like dogs??? Its all glitched and weird, what do I do, I tried to search for what to do but I still don’t know????

    1. Storm

You need to install Opifine if you haven’t yet

  20. Wirus

I would like to see more dog breeds in the resource pack
    Its amazing!

  21. Patricia?!

Does anyone know if this texture pack works with Fresh Animations.

    1. Rei

Have the texture pack at the top of the list and the fresh animations at the bottom so it does not interfere with other texture packs.

  22. cool

THIS IS AWESOME!!!! i tottaly love it

  23. deadly

i love the dogs, they’re so cute!

one problem is I can’t seem to figure out how to name them my own names without them changing into a new dog… when I tried naming my bulldog “chilli” it changed into a husky… kinda weird :/ gonna have to live with my dogs name being their breeds name I guess :/

    1. anonymous

Some specific names are supposed to change a dog to a different breed. Chilli = Husky
Ex. naming a dog “db” would change it from a husky to a doberman pinscher

      1. mars

i have the same problem but how do i know what names will work?

  24. Becca

Uhhhh whenever i use this pack it only makes the dogs look like lines. like they do not resemble a dog in the slightest

  25. Sansy Husker

Idea! Put Bluey easter eggs in this resource pack!
    Bluey=Blue Heeler, Bingo=Red Heeler, Rusty=Red Kelpie, Indy=Afghan Hound (With a Hippy-like vest), Johnny=Black Lab, Lucky=Gold Lab, Mackenzie=Collie, Coco=Pink Poodle, Snickers=Dackel (with a hat), Lila=Maltese, Judo=Chow-Chow (with a blue hair band), Honey=Beagle (with blue eye glasses), and Winton (with +4 permanent strength)

  26. Sansy Husker

Me want Heeler, Black Lab, Cattle, and Chow-Chow update!

  27. Will

This is really nice. Any chance of adding cocker spaniels?

  28. max

can you please add pit bulls?

  29. NataLucy

This is the best nod if your feeling if you need a cute dog. I was literally squeeling its the best mod please make one of cats and parrots its ok if not!

  30. noodlez

i dont know how to install it

    1. Admin

Read how to install guide on this page.

  31. Turnrp

I need just the Australian shepherd but i don’t see it in the separate versions

  32. Alex

I downloaded this Resource pack and it’s amazing! My one problem though is the fact that the dogs’ collars are always floating (over the smaller dogs) and they just not on any of the dogs necks. Is this just me?

  33. Lark

How do you get the coat variations? I can only get the black husky for example, how do you get the other colours?

  34. Qui

I downloaded the version for 1.18 since thats the version im playing on and when I open up the settings to use the pack it says its incompatible since and is for a newer version of MC, which seems odd given that I chose the right version. Using it makes my dogs show up as a bunch of compressed lines. Any idea how to fix this?

    1. Ash

I’m having the same problem, though it never shows up as incompatible or needing an update.

  35. Rainstorm

It would really mean the world to me if you could add a Newfoundland breed!

  36. Panda Elizabeth

It seems the Dogs texture changes when the dogs are put though portals (I only tested the nether portal but oh well). Is there a way to fix that? if not that is totally ok, I just don’t know if you are aware or not. (this is on the latest version of the texture pack btw)

  37. dont use it

dont use it i did and it made my dogs 2 wonkey lines!

    1. dragoncat

that means you were on a version that wont work with your current version. so if you downloaded the 1.17 version but you were playing 1.19 the dogs/wolves would only show up as lines. just download the version you were playing on and it should be fine

    2. Cunctator

      Did you have Optifine on?

  38. Bandit

I have a problem when I name the dogs they turn into a different breed and the names are not shown on the picture

    1. Bandit

      Where is the guide

  39. Owlena

Why are all of the dogs I tame just the wolf variety?

  40. Hygroscopicity

What is the other resource pack u used shown in the picture, the one that adds better grass, rocks and more textures?

  41. Francesco

What command can I use to spawn the dog in the 26th image??

  42. ssijfvmrf

i have a notebook and it doenst lag for me

  43. ShadowBlade

when I applied this, it didn’t work.
    I am really disappointed

  44. Jo

They all just look like the textured wolf, I can’t change them to other dogs. I tried with name tags but it’s a little unclear, Does anyone know how to fix it?

      1. J

I have optifine and everything required as far as i know but the texture of tamed dogs isn’t changing, do i need any specific settings for my shaders?

  45. yy

How to use this with other resourcepacks? I add other resourcepacks, my tamed wolf will look like have three head.

    1. xx

      im having the same problem

    2. Youme1a

Just download first sec and all links and extracted to same folder anmd put you resourse pack

  46. Chrome

I love how the question of why this resource pack completely ruins fps hasn’t been answered. I can run optifine with shaders for raytracing stuff and be totally fine, but looking at a custom dog almost breaks my game. Is this even optimized?

  47. ss

The wolvs look like sticks and the dogs. im new to the texture packs and all so can u pls tell me what is going on

    1. ss

Also i cant find the Quality

    2. Admin

Install optifine, read “How to install..” on this page.

  48. Biltong

This is actually unplayable everytime you face a dog in your render distance, bruh my pc is flawless how does this lag??

  49. Storm

So I wasn’t able to figure out how to turn on custom entity’s, so if someone could explain were it is better, that’d help, Thanks.

  50. Prianne

This is a beautiful addition to Minecraft dogs! However, the loss of FPS is huge :(
Hopefully there will be a fix?
    Or a lite version?

    1. DarkCrystal

i think your pc is just bad

      1. Biltong

Bud, I have a ryzen 5 3600, a GTX 1650 OC, 16GB of DDR4 ram and it lags for me

        1. charlie2909

i have a gtx 960 and it doesnt lag me

  51. El0l0

Its a cute pack and cool

  52. Jackal Cackle

Such a cute resource pack, but nearly unusable. I usually run 120ish FPS with shaders, and my framerate drops to 10-20 FPS whenever any of the dogs are visible on screen (if you look away, it’s just fine!). Wish this wasn’t such a turn off from the pack, but I’d like to savor my framerate over some cute puppies unfortunately :(

  53. kitschy

Having the same issue with this resource pack causing a huge framerate drop

Really liked the looks of it from what little I saw, but it’s unusable due to the framerate dump

  54. svi

I pressed the link for ‘1.17 and 1.18’ but the zip file is 1.15. Can anyone explain this?

    1. Admin

This is the pack version, not the Minecraft client version.

      1. dracovish

Is there ever going to be a release that actually works with 1.18? Or is there currently a way to make it work manually? I’m not super savvy on this, so I thought to ask.

        1. Admin

It works just fine with 1.18

          1. dracovish

It says that it’s incompatible, but I’ll test it and see.

            1. sdk

              did it work?

  55. No

Optifine is installed, Required Entity Settings are both enabled.

I’d love to use this resource pack, but it’s not usable right now for two reasons:

    1. There is a MASSIVE hit to framerate simply from having any number of these dogs around. My computer runs FTB packs like nothing, and this resource pack knocks my framerate down to 11 FPS. That’s insane and makes no sense for what this is doing, especially when Create runs smoothly while rotating and translating giant structures in space. There is definitely some unintended strain on the GPU being caused somewhere in this pack and it needs to be resolved if it’s going to be usable.

    2. There is a visual bug with wolves (at least those spawned from eggs) seeming to be some kind of amalgam of all the possible breeds, resulting in a three headed model with offshoots everywhere that resembles nothing. When you’re taming all these dogs from the same wolf, this glitch becomes much more off-putting.

    1. Yes

YES! Frames are usually 90-100 and just having one of them tanks me to like 50. If you find any solution let me know!!

  56. ADN

Why I cant not find Quality?

  57. DAVROLOKO

    best texture of ever

  58. xaris

    they look like sticks

  59. Hazu

The textures get bugged out if you have other dog textures downloaded and in use at the same time

  60. Dracologist

I got a weird glitch dog with no eyes, 3 heads, an undefined body, and brown fur. Does anyone know what I did wrong to summon dogthulu?

  61. KiddEddie

the resource pack works with the wolf, but its just the wolf. I cant get any of the other dogs, even when i name them. They wont show

  62. Xillian

Hey, if i use this Resourcepack my FPS drops from 120 to 20 … Please help…

  63. deceasped4

i re downloaded the newest version of this texture pack and now all my dogs look like saint bernards on steroids with three heads please help

  64. superjuicy

I have spawned several of the dog breed variety’s and each one has red carpet like lines that space out around the dog, making it look very awkward. I have intsalled optifine. please fix or help fix.

  65. OliLubAli

    epic textour pack

  66. matias

I only see a few lines where the dog is supposed to be. If anybody knows a fix please tell me!

    1. Mountify

you need optifine for the texture pack to work

  67. CartiVolt7

Uhm i have a problem, everytime i pet a dog, the collar of the dog is very messy, it looks like the dog have thousands of carpets on his head

  68. Holly

i have been trying to get this mod to work and is not.
that hit to get it to work is useless and looks like I’m not the only one having trouble

    1. Admin

Just saying .. this is not a mod, it is a resource pack. Read the installation guide on this page and be sure to read the “Important” section on this page.

      1. Holly Millard

yes have read the important section there is no quality settings in Minecraft(it mite be called something different know), can there be a revision on how to get this resource pack to function properly place.
we would love to have this pack working, it looks so cool.

        1. Admin

We are sure that you have not installed optifine. If you did, make sure you are launching the Optifine client version and not vanilla.

          1. Holly Millard

I finely got it work it was java, had to get java fix to fix’s it.

  69. spaget

for me they just appear as gray sticks walking around

      1. Admin

To get all of these dog breeds to work, you must enable custom entity models and random entities in Options > Video Settings > Quality.

        1. Katashi

          what if its java edition?

          1. Admin

Our tip was for the Java version.

  70. Raven

I have some problems with another resource pack. I use Mizunocraft 16 and when i use this resource pack with mizunocraft resource pack the wolves appear to be bugged. There’s something i can do for disable mizunocraft wolves texture? Or can i do something for resolve the conflict?

    1. Dazzle Ice

Hey Raven, not sure if you’ve fixed the problem or not, but I had the same issue and I had to unzip the other resource pack I was using and then remove the textures for the wolf. Then I loaded the unzipped folder to my resource packs in Minecraft and it worked fine. In my case, the textures were located in assets->minecraft->optifine->random->entity->wolf. If you have that, or something similar, just delete the files (or move them to a new folder). Hope this helps.

  71. mecha

    can you add a labrodoodle?

  72. abbie

I can’t find quality in the video settings

  73. Kodi

I have OPTIFINE, but when I tame the dogs (I’ve tried like 50 times) It doesn’t change the breed neither does naming them with the nametag

    1. Admin

You need to enable custom entity models and random entities in the settings.

      1. Shelly

I have the same problem, I have Optifine and Custom entity models and random entities enabled. They just stay as wolfs :(

  74. Noahbs04

    Performance issues

When I use this resource pack my performance drops heavily. Even with no shaders or recourse packs enabled my frame are still quite low. Normally with no shaders or recourse packs I have 500 frames but then the frames drop to 123 when the dog pack is enabled. Any reason why its so heavy on the frames

  75. ant

it only has wolves and they dont work when u name them. i have optifine

    1. Tcp

you need to make sure custum models is turned on

  76. foxy2007b

      1. floof

        same thing to me

    3. Tcp

Make it so custom models are on

  79. Senna

Does this resourcepack clash with shaders or mods? I have optifine and tried using this resourcepack yesterday, but the dogs looked very glitched out. I turned the custom & random entity settings off and on again, which fixed the wolves, but the tamed dogs still look strange.
I also tried turning off all my other resourcepacks, but it didn’t fix the problem. Could anyone offer me any tips on how else I could fix this? I have Optifine installed, so that shouldn’t be the problem..

  80. Sam

Can you still name the dogs names also?

  81. moon

Is there any way to get a doberman/great dane with pointed ears without using a nametag? I’ve been spawning them in forever and none of the dobermans/danes I’ve seen have pointed ears, and I want to name it something else than dpc/gdc

  82. katie

i spawned some and they were like stick figures

    1. emma

you need to have Optifine, if not it’s not gonna work.

  83. hi

I dont now how to do any of this
    oh i have education minecraft
does it still work on education minecraft?

  84. ed

naming the dogs isnt changing them, anyone know any fixes?

    1. Admin

      You need Optifine.

      1. ed

        i have optifine

  85. Riley

when I spawn the wolf it looks really good but when I tame it a bunch of lines from the hell hound comes up and mind you I have shaders on in the back and stuff like that I just really can’t find out why this doesn’t work

    1. Admin

      Because you need optfine.
This pack does not work without optfine.

    2. Senna

I have the same problem! It’s quite a strange look. Did you manage to make it work in the end?
I have Optifine, shaders and a few mods (which don’t change dogs btw) running, so I’m wondering if the shaders & mods are the problem :(

  86. _sangwoos_ashes

it is really really cutw and good!
    i like that!!!!!

It would be great if there was a choice to put the doberman’s ears up and pointed. It would mean a lot to me because my brother had a dog and it meant a lot to all of us and she had her ears up.

Whenever I take a dog bred in the Nether out, it turns into a new dog, even if it’s not Cerberus, Wither, or Skeleton. Is this meant to happen?
I also have a name suggestion to get Cerberus, Hades.
